The communication trenches were used to move between the front and rear trenches. They were also used to transport injured men to the field hospitals. The support trenches provided a second line of defense in case the front line trench was taken by the enemy.
They also contained first aid stations and kitchens to ensure men in the front line had medical treatment and hot food. The underground bunkers were used to store food, weapons and artillery. They were also used as command centres and had a telephone link to report information and receive instructions.
The underground bunkers also offered the men protection from fire and the elements. Trenches were not built in straight lines.
This was so that if the enemy managed to get into the front line trench they would not have a straight firing line along the trench.
Trenches were therefore built with alternating straight and angled lines. The traverse was the name given to the angled parts of the trench. The machine gun nest was where the machine guns were located.
They were manned by two or three soldiers who fired on any advancing enemy. The front line trenches were generally about 8 feet deep and between 4 and 6 feet wide. Soldiers would spend around a week in the front line trench then would spend a week in the rear trenches or a rest camp. Life at the front line was not pleasant; soldiers were liable to be hit by enemy fire or sometimes by their own artillery.This will impact repairs but not orders from our online store.

My question is this: Where did the lads get the parts, the flint holder, the sparker-wheelie bit and these other things that seem to be difficult to "gun deck" in the field? Thanks in advance. I would have thought the flint wheel would be hard to make,a lot of the wick covers look like dust covers of a tyre.
I believe you will find that the parts for the lighters, wicks, flint tube, spring and wheel were sold or given to the soldiers in little kits.
Most of the trench art bits and bobs were made by pioneers or engineers using their worckshops behind the lines at pioneer camp. They certainly had the forges and the machines, metal lathes and drills to make any such items. And they had the know-how and the time! You can post now and register later. In modern times most of the world's lighters are produced in France, the United States, China, and Thailand. Naphtha based lighters employ a saturated cloth wick and fibre packing to absorb the fluid and prevent it from leaking.
They employ an enclosed top to prevent the volatile liquid from evaporating, and to conveniently extinguish the flame. Butane lighters have a valved orifice that meters the butane gas as it escapes.
A spark is created by striking metal against a flintor by pressing a button that compresses a piezoelectric crystal piezo ignitiongenerating an electric arc. In naphtha lighters, the liquid is sufficiently volatile, and flammable vapour is present as soon as the top of the lighter is opened. Butane lighters combine the striking action with the opening of the valve to release gas. A metal enclosure with air holes generally surrounds the flame, and is designed to allow mixing of fuel and air while making the lighter less sensitive to wind. Specialized "windproof" butane lighters are manufactured for demanding conditions such as shipboard, high altitude, and wet climates.

Instead, windproof lighters mix the fuel with air and pass the butane—air mixture through a catalytic coil. An electric spark starts the initial flame, and soon the coil is hot enough to cause the fuel—air mixture to burn on contact. As opposed to lighters of the naphtha or standard butane type whether refillable or disposablewhich combust incompletely and thus create a sooty, orange "safety" flame, jet lighters produce a blue flame that in some cases is almost invisible and invariably burns at a far higher temperature.
The spark in such lighters is almost always produced by an electric arc as seen belowbut some jet lighters burn with incomplete combustion. Disadvantages to the jet lighter include a "roaring" noise in operation, as well as higher fuel consumption. Arc lighters use a spark to create a plasma  conduit between electrodes, which is then maintained by a lower voltage. The arc is then applied to a flammable substance to cause ignition.
Some vehicles are equipped with an electric lighter located on the dashboard or in the well between the front seats. Its electric heating element becomes hot in seconds upon activation.

It's time to make the wick. You can skip this step by just using a round wick from a lamp. Take your four pices of string and twist them together then tie a knot at both ends it should look like the picture. Next, rip your Cotten ball into smaller pieces.
Useing the toothpick move the Cotten balls around the wick. Take your beeswax and melt it in your spoon with the blowtorch then wait till it starts to cool onece it's almost solidifying pour it into your hand and shape into bullet sized thing about 2cm long and 1cm wide.
Once your wax bullet is finished and your hand is burned ouch! Chop chop. Take your kenetic sand and put it in a container deep enough to comfortably fit the bullet.
Then push the bullet into the sand leaving the top flush. Take it out by stabbing it with a needle and pulling it out. Take your spoon and clean it thoroughly of all wax then put your pewter into the spoon and melt it with a blowtorch then pour it into the mold let cool for minutes. Next you will have to rip the sparker out of a lighter. First make sure it's depressurized by thanking a thumb tack and placing it over the hole in the bottom of the lighter next hit it with a hammer and pull it out you should hear a little hiss.
